UW-Madison, tribal school hit deal
by Heather LaRoi
UW-Madison and the College of Menominee Nation has recently planned a transfer program that will allow students who attend the College of Menominee Nation to transfer to UW-Madison after two years if certain demands are met. The colleges believe it will benefit both schools by allowing Native American Student accessibility to a better education and and giving more diversity to UW-Madison. This program will make the transfering process for Native American Students a little easier. Like other colleges that have similar arrangements with UW-Madison there are certain requirements that are needed to qualify for the transferring process. Students need to obtain 54 credits and a G.P.A of atleast 3.0. If they meet these requirements than they are guaranteed admittance to UW-Madison.
I think that programs like these benefit our University. I think that we need more diversity in our school's population. I feel that bringing Native American students to our university will definitely increase the diversity, especially with a group of people that is not strongly represented in the population as of now. I think that transfer programs like these are good, especially for students. Transfer programs provide ways for students to get an education at a cheaper cost with also having the opportunity to go to a university that they want to attend for further education.

The article describes how Madison has set up a transfer arrangement with the College of Menominee Nation. If after two years the students at the Menominee College met certain requirements, including a 3.0 GPA and 54 credits, they will be guaranteed admission to UW. The program will promote diversity within the UW system, which is good for the university overall. The requirements are also put into place to make sure that the students have to be getting good grades and doing well in college in order to transfer. It provides an incentive for the students to do well. Overall, I think this is a great program implemented by UW and the College of Menominee Nation and will benefit both sides involved, specifically in terms of the diversity it promotes.
The transfer program that UW Madison and the tribal school set up is a great idea. It allows students that might not consider going to Madison an easy transition to enrollment, and it increases the student diversity. Increased diversity will benefit us all. The more types of people we come in contact with the more well rounded we will be. The only problem I have with the system, is that I think the GPA has to be higher than a 3.0. There were students in my highschool with 3.7 GPA's and they were not admitted to the University. I'm all for increasing diversity, but UW must be fair to all its students, no matter what race.
