Group 1 (Beau Dobson on School Violence)

Adults egged on boys in fight inside school, police say
Karen Rivedal-Wisconsin State Journal

Recently a fight broke out inside Madison La Follette High School. Arguments and small fights are common in schools across the United States but in an article from the Wisconsin State Journal it tells of adults egging on the three boys involved in the fight. The fight took place last Thursday and seven police officers along with 30 staff members were needed to stop it. Apparently two boys and two women approached another boy and the adults promoted the boys to fight. The mother of one of the boys actually “stomped on” one of the security guards. The article goes on to say how the Madison area is seeing a rise in violence at schools. Luis Yudice, the safety coordinator for the Madison School District commented on incidents like this reoccurring. "But sometimes you do your best and it's not enough," he said. "Obviously we're very concerned any time that kind of violence takes place in our schools." Do you think security needs to be increased at schools in the Madison area
so incidents like these become less frequent?

I thing the main issue here is that adults contributed to a high school fight. Two women were charged in relation to this instance and face jail time and large fines (Capitol Times). High school aged boys are going to get in fights. It is not possible to control that many hormonally charge teenagers with the safety resources available in high schools. The fact that two adult women not only got confronted this boy but also got involved in a fight at a high school is despicable. These women are showing no example to follow what so ever. They are supposed to be role models for their children and they are going to a high school to aid their sons in a fight. Until the attitude of these parents’ changes there is no chance the attitude of the youth will change.

Yes I believe an increase in security is crucial in many schools. This one case in particular proves that with a lack of security anything can happen. Drastic measures do not have to take place but simply another security guard or something to show that the school is taking action. Knowing there is a higher level of security makes people more aware that people are watching them and will act on unwanted behavior. More security will make these incidents less frequent and will certainly make the Madison area a safer place.

Since I was unable to find the link the article that the original blog was written on, I have to comment on what I know from Beau’s original post. The most shocking thing about the article from what I know is the part about the adults actually “egging” the kids on. Fights between school-aged kids are going to happen, I mean, they even happen among adults. But it is unreal to think that adults supported the fight, and even participated in it. Another thing that astonishes me is the part that Beau said about the mother actually stomping on a security guard that was trying to break up the fight. I wish I knew what caused such a large fight, one that took about 30 people to break, to start in the first place.

I don’t know if it is necessary to increase security in schools. I am not sure, but I’m willing to guess that fights of this magnitude do not occur very often. Until events such as this one become more frequent, I would say that it is a waste of money that could be allocated to areas in greater need. Obviously, you cannot put a price on safety, but I just believe that until the problem becomes more evident, there is no need for an increase in security.
