Group 1 (Tyler Tiede on Brett Favre)

A hot topic for many “Wisconsinites” is the prospect of the Brett Favre led Green Bay Packers going to the playoffs this year. The NFC North 1st place Packers have a record of 9 – 1, which makes them tied with the Dallas Cowboys for an overall 1st place in the NFC. The Packers have already virtually knocked off the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears, both division rivals, leaving only the 6 – 4 Detroit Lions standing in their way. A win on Thanksgiving Day game against the Lions will basically bury the hatchet and lock up first place for the Packers, preparing them for the for another Thursday night game a week later against the Cowboys.

This blazing start is the third best start in franchise history; behind Curly Lambeau’s 1929 team, which won ten straight games and eventually winning the NFL championship, and Vince Lombardi’s 1962 team that also won ten straight games and the NFL championship. A continued winning streak could set the Packers up to be a number one seed in the playoffs, with homefield advantage and a first round bye. I know the team consists of many players other than three-time MVP Brett Favre, but my question is: could the Packers have reached this feat under the leadership of Aaron Rogers, instead of the veteran Brett Favre?

I do not think that the Packers would be at 10-1 without the leadership of Brett Favre. Aaron Rodgers cannot match the experience Favre has had in the NFL, and could not have lead such a young team to such an outstanding record. I do feel however, that although much of the Packer's success is due to Favre, he also a very good and underrated supporting cast. The defense for the most part has played outstanding, and although there is not a real running threat, the running backs seem to make plays when they have to. The wide receivers have stepped their game up, and the whole team is playing well as a whole. Favre is having an outstanding year and he credits much of his success to being familiar with the offense. He has clearly stated that he struggled with the adjustment last year. I hope the adjustment, from years past, of having such a good record continues. If anyone can continue a winning streak, Favre is the man to do it.

There is no doubt that the Green Bay Packers would not have such an unbelievable record without the play of Brett Favre, but I Think that they would still have won the division this year, because it is that bad. Green bay has more talent than many people give them credit for. The defence is full of pro-bowl players and they have one of the best offensive lines in the NFC. They wide receiving crew is led by the most underrated player in the league in Donald Driver and they have seen decent production out of their running back by comity. I think that the Packers would be around 7-4 without Brett Favre considering the talent they have.
(p.s. I am not a Packer fan)

Brett Favre is doing an incredible job this year but I agree that his success is also contributed to the rest of the offense. They have been playing together for quite some time now and do work well together. They are a great team, and you can't win with just a star quarterback. As Josh said, the rest of the division is not doing that well and the Green Bay Packers could still do very well without the help of Favre. They are doing well but they did lose to the Cowboys last night...p.s. I am also not a packer fan.
